The Annual JOGLE Run

2008

This year’s Barnsley Jogle will take place on 10/11 June, slightly earlier than usual so that it is not too near the National Rally. Entries for this well-established event are now coming in and the closing date for entries is 30 April.

Please return the entry form at the bottom of this page directly to organiser Christine Haigh.

A Brief History

The idea of the Barnsley J.O.G.L.E. started at a Barnsley branch meeting in 1993 when members were discussing the merits of their respective Morris Minors and whether they would be capable of a long distance run.  A few ideas were tossed backwards and forwards and the eventual outcome was that the Barnsley J.O.G.L.E. 24 Hour Endurance Run was born.  The first run was undertaken by three teams of two in a van, a car and a traveller, who, on successfully completing it reported the event in Minor Matters (the National Club’s magazine).  Members from around the country read the article and enquired whether the run would be repeated and if so could they join in.  the rest, as they say is history.  The Barnsley J.O.G.L.E. is now an annual event attracting entrants from as far a field as Holland.

To maximise the hours of daylight for the run the time of year was important and so we try to hold the event as near to the 21st June (the longest day) as we can.  The run starts from John o’ Groats at 11 am on Tuesday morning and finishes at Land’s End at 11 am on Wednesday morning.  Again the mid week run was decided on to avoid holiday traffic at the weekends.

The event has also evolved, somewhat in the intervening years.  Mike Lennon of the Morris Minor Centre at Oldbury in the Midlands very kindly stays open for us until the early hours of the morning for everyone to stop, have a break and freshen up before the final leg of the journey south.  He doesn’t do too badly with sales of spares either!!  Kathy Ling from the Shropshire branch, along with her husband and volunteers usually provide us with very welcome refreshments at Oldbury.

On arrival at Land’s End the Barnsley branch “Welcome Crew” is waiting with tea and coffee and the most delicious bacon sandwich you will ever eat.  The “Welcome Crew” is another innovation which has evolved over the years from nothing in the beginning to a flask of coffee or tea for the intrepid adventurers and now the “Full Monty”.

Over the last couple of years we have also introduced commemorative t.shirts  and a meal in a local pub near to Land’s End on the Wednesday evening after everyone has had the chance to catch up on lost sleep.  It also gives them the opportunity to swap stories of their exploits of the previous 24 hours.

Numbers of entrants fluctuates from year to year but while ever the interest is there it is anticipated that the Barnsley J.O.G.L.E. will continue for many years to come.
